California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST)
Mr. Wyatt previously spent 30 years in Public Safety. He is keenly aware of the ongoing need to maintain public trust, and the role that thorough independent investigations into allegations of misconduct play in maintaining this trust.
In December 2017, Mr. Wyatt retired from the City of Irvine as a police lieutenant after serving the community or almost 30 years. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Wyatt was responsible for the management and daily operations of the department’s Office of Professional Standards. Prior to promoting to lieutenant, Mr. Wyatt spent approximately two years as a sergeant in the Office of Professional Standards. In these roles, Mr. Wyatt has conducted numerous complex internal affairs investigations, including allegations of discrimination and harassment, excessive force, and violations of departmental policies. He also acted as a human resources liaison, the risk manager, was part of the City’s threat assessment team, and was responsible for the department’s annual audit. Mr. Wyatt spent four years as the president of the Irvine Police Association. During which time he was actively involved in personal investigations and the disciplinary process. In addition to his experience conducting personnel investigations, Mr. Wyatt has over 10 years of experience conducting complex criminal investigations and is the recipient of several prestigious awards for the cases he solved.
Mr. Wyatt has worked with all levels of city staff, elected officials, and legal counsel, and develops collaborative working relationships. He has a great deal of experience working within the guidelines of departmental policies and procedures, employee handbooks, memorandums of understanding, and the police and firefighter Bill of Rights.
Mr. Wyatt has considerable knowledge and training in criminal investigations and workplace investigations. He has accumulated over 200 hours of training in criminal and administrative investigative techniques.
Mr. Wyatt attended the California Commission for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Internal Affairs Course in 2013, and the POST Background Investigator’s Course in 2017. He attends the Liebert Cassidy Whitmore Annual Labor Conference. Mr. Wyatt successfully completed the Association of Workplace Investigators Training Conference in 2019 and is an AWI Certificate Holder. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Azusa Pacific University and a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from California Coast University.
As an experienced investigator, Mr. Wyatt has investigated an array of administrative cases involving conduct and performance; including allegations of criminal behavior, excessive or unreasonable use of force, allegations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, integrity violations, and violations of departmental policies.
